A City of Infinite Possibilities

Houston, Texas

Even though Houston is synonymous with the oil boom (and subsequent crash) of the 1980s, the city has continued to grow and thrive and is home to cutting edge museums, respected theaters, decadent spas and golf courses, state of the art sports and concert venues and Space Center Houston. Whether you find yourself having a meal under the sea at the Downtown Aquarium or deciding on a cocktail in Bayou Place, Houston is a city full of wonderful surprises. From the unique boutiques of Rice Village to the eclectic energy of the Chelsea Market district, Houston has the diversity and energy to remain a popular domestic vacation city for the Black professional traveler.

Houstonians spend more per capita on restaurants than residents of any other city—with so many choices, this information comes as no surprise. Underneath Houston’s polished architectural exterior lies a restaurant scene that’s full of soul and flavor. Houston has one of the richest blues traditions of any city in the country, and Danton’s Gulf Coast Seafood Kitchen has a remarkable Sunday Blues Brunch worth checking out. As a major port city, Houston boasts an extremely diverse culture base that has dramatically …

The Breakfast Klub

Houston, Texas

3711 Travis St Houston, TX The Breakfast Klub is a great place to eat. The name says it all… this is a BREAKFAST KLUB. The restaurant is only open from 7am – 2pm, and there are certain dishes that aren’t even available after 9am. The “Katfish & Grits” and chicken & waffles are definitely worth setting the alarm clock a little early!

One thing I can say without a doubt about the Breakfast Klub is that it has a homemade charm that can’t be manufactured. The mismatched picture frames on the walls, sporadic couches in the dining area and close tables give this place the energy of a home away from home. The hustle and bustle is reminiscent of my Nana’s kitchen, as the line that wraps around the building is ultimately seated, fed and waved away with a smile and to-go box. The venue is intimate and friendly, the service is sweet and sassy, and the food is something that will keep you coming back.

There are two rules of engagement that I will offer to a first time visitor. Before you attempt to visit the “BK” (as it’s lovingly referred to by the regulars), …

Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

Houston, Texas

1834 Southmore Houston, TX

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston’s Third Ward is the only museum of its kind dedicated to the heritage and legacy of the African American soldier. It maintains the largest collection of Black military paraphernalia in the world. Once inside the walls of this life-sized homage to freedom, you are immediately immersed in the valor of the soldiers themselves.

There are authentic uniforms, weapons, medals, and plaques as well as saddles, equipment, letters and pictures. It’s a living, breathing memorial to a group of men that forever changed the face of the American military.

In an effort to help "pave the way" for a new, more fitting building, the BSNM has launched the Buy A Brick campaign that allows patrons to dedicate a brick to a loved one; the bricks will be used in the new facility. This museum is an entity that is worthy of support and an integral part of Black History in Houston.
