The Voice from the Pulpit

Atlanta, Georgia

This MLK Day I thought about our family reunion in Atlanta a few years ago. During a tour of the city we dropped by the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Social Change. After observing our first couple’s final resting place. I took a short stroll next door to Ebenezer Baptist Church. I remember sitting quietly in its pews and imaging Martin's riveting voice penetrating it’s walls and all who sat in his presence.

I wonder what his message would have been today in light of all that has happened. So if you are ever in the ATL and haven’t had the opportunity to visit, make in a priority. His presence, as well as his message, is still there and is as powerful as ever.

My Impressions of Atlanta

Atlanta, Georgia

Overall Atlanta was cool, it's an interesting city that is a little over hyped. But I can easily see why people move down there. The housing prices are so cheap I wouldn’t mind moving down.

The first thing about Atlanta is that you've got to drive, no other way around it. The first day we tried not to drive and use taxi's and MARTA but it cost over $50 for just a couple of hours.

The famous Underground was kind of hood and there is no one in Downtown Atlanta...no one. Sometimes not even other cars after non peak hours. The only people down there are homeless people.

The other places that were cool were Atlantic Station and Inman Park. Why did we go to the Fox Sports and there were like 50 Ravens fans? It was like I brought Bmore with me.

The nightlife was a little lacking for what everyone made ATL out to be. From talking to folks it seems like we hit ATL a year too late. Most of the bars and clubs in Buckhead were gone due to new construction and we heard a lot of restaurants …

Apache Café

Atlanta, Georgia

Although depicted as stuffy in a scene from Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, where Shemar Moore’s “Orlando” takes Kimberly Elise’s “Helen” out on their first date, the atmosphere at Apache Café is actually quite laid-back, and encourages you to come as you are. Whether on a first date or just spending a night out with friends, its eclectic, energetic vibes, and vibrating rhythms will have you hooked upon entering. Depending on which night you visit, you can find anything from spoken word jams and art showcases to musical performances by unsigned talent.

A haven for self-expression, Apache also provides a weekly forum to vent creatively about everything from racism to relationships to work. The intimate setting also offers outdoor patio seating for those warm southern nights. A scrumptious array of Latin and Caribbean cuisine enhances the experience. Start with the delicious salmon cakes, quesadillas, or jerk chicken—they are just a few teasers on the menu to satisfy the taste buds. Also, sipping on such spirits as the Choc-a-Tini and the Ohranj Crush are musts, as is purchasing a nice piece of art before you leave to top off the evening.
