Steppin' Out

Chicago, Illinois

I’ve had several haircuts in Chicago and I’ve always found their barbers to be first class. One of the top shops in the city is Maxima Barber Salon, which has locations in the busy West Loop area and the South Side’s Bronzeville. While you can drop in to be lined up, Maxima allows you to make reservations and has first class accommodations with WiFi, manicures and shoe shines all available on the premises. You can check them out at www.maximachicago.com.

Once properly fed and with your do’ in shape, its time to party. From hip hop to blues to steppin’, the entire spectrum of black musical expression can be found being played live or by DJs in Chicago. So it’s hard to suggest any one or two spots. But two DJs I enjoy spin regularly in town so I look them up whenever I hit Chicago. Lono Brazil’s Disco Unusual is a traveling party that often docks at Danny’s (1951 N. Dickens) and features of a mix of dance classics and local house. Keep up with Lono at his blog: http://discounusualsocialclub.blogspot.com/.

One of the legendary Chi-town DJs is Ron Trent, who both produces house and r&b music, as well as plays regularly at local clubs when he’s not touring nationally and in Europe. Ron is committed to deep house music and his parties have a truly tribal feel. That one of his most famous parties was called Africa Hi-Fi speaks to Ron’s progressive ethnic mix of music. The last few years he has been doing several parties at Sonotheque (1444 W. Chicago Avenue, 312-2267600) but check him out at www.myspace.com/rontrent to see what he’s up to.
