City Slang: Atlanta, GA

Atlanta, Georgia

Any southern city is known for its slang. The dirty south is almost a country on its own. Check out some of Atlanta's famous slang and the next time you're in the A, pull out your ATL vocab!

I found it in the AJC: This is Atlanta's only major daily newspaper. The Journal carried the motto "Covers Dixie like the Dew," a well-known phrase to those who grew up in Hotlanta.

ITP and OTP: People from Atlanta refer to the urban areas in Atlanta as ITP or "inside the perimeter." The opposite is "outside the perimeter." The perimeter is Interstate 285, which circles the entire city. If you really want to feel like a local, reference the "bottom end" or "top end" to indicate whether you're above or below I-20.

Beverly Hills of the South: Atlanta's called a lot of things, but the upscale section of Buckhead is referred to as the Beverly Hills of the South.

Spaghetti Junction: The Tom Moreland Interchange.

Mash the Button: Don't just stand there in the elevator! Push the button.

"What'll ya have?": The unofficial catchphrase of The Varsity, a popular fast food staple.

Hartsfield Intergalactic: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, one of the country's busiest.

Damn Yankee: A Yankee of course refers to someone from the north, but someone from the north that moves to Atlanta is a damn Yankee.
