Culture Fest: Igloofest
Montreal, Quebec
Igloofest takes place in the Old Port of Montreal at the Jacques-Cartier Pier and is only five years old, but they continually draw tens of thousands of people. This annual music festival is saturated with heavy-duty electronic music lovers.
In the dead cold of Canada's unforgiving winter, music lovers gather for three consecutive weekends to dance to electronic and techno music at Canada's beautifully frozen waterfront. That's dedication. Igloofest goers bond over bundling up and dancing the night away to artists and DJ's like A-Trak, Chocobeets, Smokey Joe & the Kid, Black Tiger Sex Machine, Green Velvet and Ostrich to only name a handful. The performers are seemingly unlimited.
Surprisingly, the cold doesn't deter people from attending the festival, as the number of attendees has increased over the years. Some festival goers take it upon themselves to dress in costume. You'll see everything from polar bears to vintage ski-wear from the 1980s. These festival goers are projected on the big screen and other partiers can vote on the best costume. The winner gets an all-expenses-paid week for two at a local ski resort.
Most music festivals take place in warm, comfortable weather, but Igloofest depends on icy, below freezing temperatures to keep the party going. In fact, festival organizers agonize if the temps reach freezing or above as opposed to below because they then have to deal with rebuilding the icy disco once temps drop again. Snow, blocks of ice everywhere, dance/techno/electronic music and visible breath is what makes Igloofest so invigorating.
Igloofest starts this weekend January 12-14 and continues through the month on the 19-21, 26-28. So it's not too late to get your tickets.
