Airports Going Green: Chicago's O'Hare

If you fly in and out of Chicago or if you're just stopping through, be sure to check out O'Hare's Urban Garden! Opened in the fall of last year on the mezzanine level of Terminal 3, the 928-square foot space is the world's first aeroponic garden in an airport.

Aeroponics is an environmentally friendly method of growing plants without soil. Instead, plants are grown in a water and mineral nutrient solution (such as cubes of spun volcanic rock) in towers that are 8 feet tall. This uses about two-thirds less water (as the water is recycled through the towers so that none evaporates or is wasted) and is favored as a solution for farming in a limited space. O’Hare's Urban Garden provides year-round cultivation and no weed pulling.

So, how does this affect you? Other than being nice to view, vertical gardens can improve indoor air quality, absorb carbon and produce oxygen, insulate buildings, reduce noise, and provide a local, fresh food source. The produce grown in the Urban Garden is used at certain restaurants right in O’Hare!

Produce growing in the garden includes basil, cilantro, lettuce, habanero peppers, thyme, oregano, green beans, Swiss chard, dill, parsley, chives…the list goes on. Ticketed airport visitors can also experience the serenity of the garden while enjoying a meal at O’Hare’s Bar and Grille.

Celebrate Black History Month with American Airlines and Macy's!

In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of African American artist Romare Bearden's birth, select Macy's stores nationwide will highlight some of the artist's most important works via special exhibitions and events. These satellite exhibits will showcase some rarely displayed worked loaned by private collectors, in addition to works on loan from local museums.

Additional in-store celebrations will include children's collage making events, special readings of Bearden's children's book, as well as cooking demonstrations from local chefs featuring Bearden's favorite recipes and Caribbean dishes from a cookbook he illustrated. For more information, click here.

To learn more about Romare Bearden, who is recognized as one of the most creative and original visual artists of the 20th century, please click here.

At the opening receptions, customers will have the opportunity to receive a 15% off community shopping pass, and a $10 Macy's gift card. Additionally, with a purchase of $50 or more, while supplies last, customers can receive a printed scarf featuring Romare Bearden's most revered work, The Lamp.

During the week-long exhibits, Macy's will also offer the opportunity to enter to win a trip for two to Paris, Romare Bearden's beloved city and the inspiration for his work on the project Paris Blues Revisited. Courtesy of American Airlines, the prize includes round-trip coach air travel, hotel and a $500 Macy's shopping spree.
