Off the Beaten Path
Atlanta, Georgia
Virginia Highland is one of the most popular neighborhoods for Atlanta residents, but not what might typically be considered a “tourist attraction”. If you're looking to venture off the beaten Georgia Aquarium and Coca Cola Museum path, it's definitely worth a visit. The area, which gets its name from the intersection of Virginia and Highland Avenues, is located at the edge of downtown, yet you can easily forget that you’re in a big city, without the usual chain stores to remind you. Developed in the early 1900’s, the Highlands has managed to retain its historic architecture and neighborhood charm while integrating pockets of commercialism, which include everything from sidewalk cafés and eclectic boutiques to art galleries and spas.
During the day, Brunch at Murphy’s, a bistro and wine bar, should be on your to-do list. While it is worth the inevitable wait, if you’re short on time, American Roadhouse, which is nearby, is usually quicker, a little more casual, less pricey and equally delicious. When you’re sufficiently stuffed, you can walk and ideally shop off the calories, finding everything from one-of-a-kind jewelry and clothing to stationery and art. Need to rest your feet or entire body for that matter? Stop in for a mani-pedi or a hot stone massage at Key Lime Pie Salon and Spa, voted “Best in Atlanta”.
There’s no need to look elsewhere when the sun sets. Nighttime in the Highlands has just as much to offer. Down some coffee and wine at Java Vino, bar hop, or drop in for some authentic blues at Blind Willies. You can even make your own pottery or an original “souvenirs” to take home at Wired and Fired, which is open til’ midnight on weekends. And since you can BYOB and food, you can get lit while your pottery gets fired. Any taste, any time, any budget, there’s something for every one in Virginia Highland.

Thanks FFG . This sounds like a neighborhood I wouldn't expect to be in ATL. To be honest never heard of it. Where exactly is it? Edge of which side of downtown?

Thanks, FFG!

To answer your question, the area actually got it's name from the location. Bounded on the east by the Atlanta City limit, it is where Virginia and North Highland Avenues intersect.

Thanks, FFG. I spent a year in Atlanta but hardly made it over that way. I'll have to check it out next time I'm there.

I love the Virginia Highlands area and Murphy's is hands down my favorite restuarant in Atlanta. Great piece on the neighborhood.

Yay Virginia Highland! When I lived in Atlanta in the 90's this was one of my best kept secrets. I used to hit this Thai spot and this pizza shop/bar there regularly. GREAT times! Yeah pull up, park, stroll, and be easy for real! good post.

The Highlands is my go to spot for dates with my Queen. Noche' offers a great variety of tapas at low prices. Paolo's has the best Gelatos in Atlanta and just up the road is my favorite place for a slice of pizza Fellini's.
